Other Fire Preparedness Tips and Books

Fire Extinguishers

- 1. You should have, at least one fire extinguisher on each level of your home.

- 2. You should have at least one fire extinguisher in your garage.

- 3. You should check your fire extinguishers once a year. Look at the gauge on the fire extinguisher and the needle should be on the green (charged) portion of the gauge.

- 4. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher (Remember PASS: Press

Aim

Squeeze

Spray

(See poster below)

-.5. When buying a fire extinguisher make sure that it is capable of extinguishing type A, B and C fires (See the chart below for an explanation of each type of fire.

- 6. You should have fire extinguisher in your vehicle.

In case of an evacuation caused by a possible fire, and if you have time to do so, go ahead and place all of your fire extinguishers outside near your front door. They may be useful to firefighters.

- To check the viability of your ABC fire extinguisher, Checks the gauge as long as the arrow is in the green then it's OK. If you're not trusting the gauge do this. Pick up your fire extinguisher and slowly tip it over. If you feel a clump / weight shifting downward then you'll need to have your fire extinguisher serviced.

If this not the case then your fire extinguisher does not need servicing.

Pressure Sprayers

If you are mowing or weed whacking your property and you're worried about igniting a fire, have a CLEAN (no chemicals in it!) pressure sprayer filled with water and a few drops of dish soap available near by. Make sure that you pump your pressure sprayer up so that it has pressure to spray the water and dish soap mixture. You will use it as an outdoor fire extinguisher. If a small fire starts you can use your CLEAN pressure sprayer as a fire extinguisher. The dish soap will act as a smothering agent.

Fuel Dump

If you have enough space in your backyard you might want to set up a "Fuel Dump" away from structures (i.e.: your house, barn, etc...) Tis will be the place where you'll put your flammables (i.e.: spray paint cans, gas cans, propane tanks and canisters, etc...) Once you have set up your "Fuel Dump" you will need to post a few signs that clearly state "Danger, Fuel Dump" or "Danger, Flammable Materials, Keep fire away" see the sign below from safetysign.com.

This will save the Fire Department time because they won't have to waste time looking through your garage or home to find those highly flammable materials

Trailer chains can spark fires!

Loose trailer chains can start fires as they drag on the ground a create sparks while dragging along. If you are going to tow a trailer make sure that the safety chains do not touch the ground. Depending on the size of the chain, use an old rubber hose to wrap said chain thereby keeping the chain from toughing or dragging directly on the ground, Zip tie the hose or flexible conduit tightly around the chain in question.

- See below the poster of the six ways a vehicle can start a wildfire

Swimming Pools

A full swimming pool can be useful to fire fighters.

- 1. If you have an "in ground" Swimming pool, post the amount of gallons it contains so that firefighters know what water resource it can provide them if needed

Also, firefighters may pump water directly from it if need be.

-2. If you have an "above ground" swimming pool, post the amount of gallons it contains so firefighter know what water resource it can provide them if needed. Firefighters will probably not pump directly from it, but they might be able to use the water to fight small fires.

Purifying Water for Drinking Purposes

Supposedly you can survive for three days without water but I'm not willing to take that risk. So how does one purify water?

Assuming that the water is not contaminated with gasoline or other chemicals.

Option number 1.

- a. If the water is filled with debris, use a clean cloth to filter

the debris out.

- b. Use a clean pan or container, fill it with the filtered water.

- c. over a source of heat (a fire) boil the water for at least a solid minute or more (the longer the better).

- d. Let it cool

- e. Enjoy your water.

Option number 2

-a. You should get rid of debris by filtering the water through a clean cloth.

-b. You should use unscented bleach. which contain 8.25% or at least 5.25% sodium Hydrochloride

To learn more about the different types of bleach, click here.

Here are the water to bleach ratios for

purifying water.

1 qt of water = 2 drops of unscented bleach

1 gallon of water = 8 drops of unscented bleach

5 gallons of water = 1/2 teaspoon of unscented

bleach

Option number 3:

Use water purifying tablets. Make sure to follow the instructions related to the use of such water purifying tablets.
